Six months to instant. Is your payout ready?
PILLAR · NO WAITING
On 9 April 2027, waiting for money stops being a business decision and becomes a regulatory requirement. From that date, every payment and e-money institution in the EU must send and receive instant euro payments, around the clock.
That is now roughly six months away.
Most finance architectures are only half ready. Instant on the way in, batch on the way out. Instant Monday to Friday, silent from Friday evening to Monday morning. A payment that lands in ten seconds and then waits two days for the next processing window has not really arrived. It is waiting in a different place.
For a marketplace paying sellers, a platform paying partners, or a company paying suppliers, that gap is not a technical detail. It is the difference between a seller who stays and a seller who leaves.
Speed stops being a preference. It becomes a requirement.
The deadline does one useful thing: it turns speed from a preference into a requirement. Until now, slow payouts were tolerated because everyone was slow. After April 2027, slow payouts mean non-compliance. Buyers will start asking about it in their RFPs and tenders, because they will have to.
We have been running both ends of this journey in live production: receiving euros in under 10 seconds (since early 2025), sending with Verification of Payee (since late 2025), moving real money 24/7 including weekends and holidays, at 99.988% uptime over the last 90 days.
This is not on a roadmap. It is in production today. Because receiving and sending live inside one system under one licence, there is no seam between them where money waits. It comes in and can go straight back out — on the same platform, with the same audit record, and the same institution responsible for both.
Two different machines
A bank is built around the balance: the longer money sits, the better it suits its model. Instant infrastructure is built around the moment money arrives. Two different machines, measured by opposite outcomes.
Six months is enough time to get ready, but not much more. The institutions that treat 9 April 2027 as a starting line, not a finish line, will spend next spring answering client questions instead of scrambling at the last minute.
Is instant already running on both ends of your payments, or still waiting on one side?
